Beefteki

I had this dish last week at my favorite local Greek restaurant and it was amazing! Beefteki is ground lamb and beef seasoned with mint, cumin, onions and a dash of nutmeg then formed into burger patties. It’s served on top of a warm pita smothered in fresh tatziki sauce then topped with a grilled onion, tomato seasoned with olive oil, salt, pepper and finally covered with crumbled feta cheese. I just made it for three of my friends and it was absolutely delicious!
INGREDIENTS:
1 pound ground lamb
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon onions, chopped
4 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
1/2 of a cucumber, grated with the skin on, then drained in a cheesecloth
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
17 oz. container Greek yogurt
2 tomatoes, sliced
1 red onion, sliced thick
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cumin
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup Greek feta cheese, crumbled
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
4 pita bread rounds, brushed with olive oil, sprinkled with oregano, and toasted or grilled
In a bowl, mix the lamb, beef, onions, cumin, nutmeg and mint until combined. Season with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 burger patties.
If you are using an indoor grill pan, cook the sliced onions on medium-high heat for about 6-8 minutes or until cooked through. Set aside on a plate. If you are using an outdoor grill you can cook the onions at the same time as the burgers.
Cook the burgers on a grill over medium-high heat until burgers are cooked to your desired likeness.
To make the tatziki sauce:
In a bowl combine the yogurt, cucumber, dill and garlic. Mix thoroughly.
Season the sliced tomatoes with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
Brush the pita rounds with olive oil and season with dried oregano. Grill the pita rounds for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
To plate the food, place one pita round on a plate, spread and cover the pita with tatziki sauce. Next add the burger then the grilled onion, tomato and finally top with crumbled feta cheese.

Thank you! I’m going to give this a shot this week. When I was stationed in Germany we used to hit a little gasthaus off the train station and they served a super beefteki. It was my wife’s favorite dish there. We could never find it here in the states. I hope this comes close.
Hi George, Sounds great, you should not be disappointed! Let us know how it turns out!
